Zoe Arthur
Zoe Arthur is a New Zealand artist trained at AUT in Auckland. Her practice explores the life and work of Jane Austen and the enduring imagery of the English countryside.
Artist Statement:
By depicting the landscapes and domestic interiors of the late Georgian and early Regency periods, I connect with a history that has fascinated me since childhood. Through this process, I seek to better understand Jane Austen’s world while also reflecting on my own heritage and sense of place.
The influence of nineteenth-century Impressionist painters has been significant in shaping my understanding of paint and its expressive potential. Working on linen canvas, I allow brushstrokes to remain fluid, gestural, and visible, reflecting the way I piece together Austen’s novels, real life, my heritage, and my imagination.
