While viewing a documentary on Piha, I was overcome by the sensation of drifting like a gull - rising above its windswept cliffs as the camera slowly panned. After a lifetime spent with Aotearoa’s coastlines in my heart, I felt compelled to capture that airiness in words. From this elevated vantage, I feel melancholy: a mix of loss, displacement, and yearning.
